FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DOES COACHING WORK?

My style of coaching is very client-driven. You come to me with struggles or concerns, I share tools and information with you, and then I help you to find solutions.

The details of this process differ greatly depending on the client and what they are struggling with at the time. For some we might be creating organization structures, for others working on relationships, and for others we start with simply trying to understand and accept how the ADHD brain works.

As time goes on, goals can change, and so can our approach. The main focus is that every day to feel better, more confident, and more able to take on challenges.

We meet once or twice per week via Zoom or other video communication platforms. Typically, I will meet with a client twice per week when they are recently diagnosed, going through a transition, or having significant life struggles. Once things become more stable for them we can move to once per week.

WHAT ARE YOUR QUALIFICATIONS?

I have worked with neurodiversity for over 15 years, and have grown up in a family full of neurodiverse brains.

In college I studied psychology, human development, and education, and have an MA in Education as well as a teaching credential.

I worked in Behavioral Respite and ABA Therapy for 12 years, and was a Registered Behavioral Technician (it has probably expired by now).  I no longer practice nor promote  ABA Therapy. If you have questions or concerns pertaining to my involvement with ABA, send me a message and I will be happy to address these things.

I have also worked as a tutor and a Social Studies teacher, before becoming a Therapeutic Teacher in a self-contained behavior classroom. I have taught middle school and high school for students with severe trauma and behavioral issues as well as neurodivergence.

I have Equity Informed Mediation Training.

I am Certified in CPI which is Nonviolent Crisis Prevention Intervention program.

I have completed Collaborative Problem Solving Training.

I myself have ADHD and have spent my life developing structures and strategies to cope with my symptoms. I have spent approximately 3 billion* hours online researching ADHD and will continue to do so until we understand every last part of it!

*this may or may not be an exaggeration

CAN YOU DIAGNOSE ME?

No, only a licensed clinician can give a formal diagnosis. I work exclusively on reducing the negative impact of symptoms, and cannot prescribe or treat your ADHD as a psychological condition.

CAN YOU PRESCRIBE MEDICATION?

No, but I can help you talk with your doctor about your symptoms to support you choosing a medication that is right for you.

I also help my clients in finding the right doctor and in making appointments when necessary.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A COACH AND A THERAPIST?

A therapist will take time to find the source of your psychological issues and help you to heal those issues. I will simply support you to be able to move forward in your life despite those issues.

I recommend that all of my clients also have therapists whenever possible. I can be in communication with the therapist in order to give you more well-rounded support.

WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?

I am located in Portland, Oregon, however, I work remotely via Zoom or other video communication platforms exclusively during COVID.

I have clients located around the world.

HOW DO I FIND A COACH NEAR ME?

If you are looking for someone to coach you in-person in your area, TheADHDirectory.com is a great resource.

DO YOU HAVE A COACHING CERTIFICATION?

I chose not to get a coaching certification, because it is not regulated (literally anyone could just set up a credentialing program), it is incredibly expensive, and coaches that I trust that have gone through those programs have had very negative things to say about them.

For now, my clients are happy with my services and are making progress. If this ever ceases to be the case I will consider finding a good credentialing program.
